Abilene man found guilty of killing woman in 2015

ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) - An Abilene man accused of shooting and killing a woman in July 2015 has now been convicted. 

John Atkins was found guilty in the Murder of 39-year-old Latisha Hilley.

A jury handed over their guilty verdict at about 6 p.m., Thursday, four days after the trial started.

Punishment proceedings are set to start Friday morning.

According to court documents, Hilley was found dead behind a home near Pine Street and Summit Street in July 2015.

He was previously tried for Possession of a Prohibited Weapon in Federal Court in connection to the murder, but that trial resulted in a mistrial due to a hung jury.

Court documents revealed Hilley was last seen alive when she was dropped of on S. 1st Street around 1:00 a.m. Her friends believe she was at Lake Ft. Phantom Hill with Atkins before she was shot and killed.
