Abilene man sentenced to 18 years for murder

ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) - An Abilene man has been sentenced to serve 18 years behind bars for a 2015 murder.

Traymon Peoples, 25, pleaded guilty to Murder and received his 18-year sentence on Thursday - just days before the case was set to go to trial.

Peoples is accused of stabbing Curtis Duhart, 71, multiple times at the Camelot Apartments in May of 2015.

Court documents state a witnesses told police Duhart pulled a knife on Peoples after he allegedly stole money.

The incident then seemed to deescalate and Duhart returned to the couch, but Peoples followed him with a knife behind his back saying "you gonna stab me", according to witness testimony detailed in the documents. 

That was the last thing the witness observed. She left the scene with Peoples standing in front of Duhart with the knife in his hand.

The documents also state Peoples waived his right to remain silence when contacted by police and claims he acted out of self defense.
