Abilene Police Consider Move to New Building

ABILENE, Texas (KTAB) - Abilene Police may leave their home of several decades at 450 Pecan Street in search of a bigger - and more structurally sound - building.

Police are currently eyeing the former K Mart on South 1st Street as their new base of operations. That building would also include the former Mattress World store, as well as the former Winn-Dixie.

Police would go from the 60,000 square feet of space they have currently, to nearly 118,000 square feet if the move proves to be the right choice.

Chief of Police Stan Standridge says that the structural integrity of their current home is a concern, "coupled with the fact that we've outgrown the law enforcement center."

It's a move that City Manager Robert Hanna says depends on fiscal responsibility, saying that they must make sure that it "doesn't levee any additional taxes on the citizens."

At this time, the Taylor County Sheriff's Department has no plans of moving along with the Abilene Police.
