Abilene Police Department Announces New Four-Legged Recruit

ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) - The Abilene Police Department will welcome their newest four-legged recruit next week.

On Monday, May 22 at 9 a.m. in front of the HEB at 1345 Barrow Street, the Abilene Police Department will introduce their newest recruit, Tica, to the public.

Tica, a 3-year-old female Belgian Malinois, was purchased in February through a community grant of $10,800 by the community partners at the HEB store in Abilene.

She was first put into service with her handler, Officer Josh New, in early April after completing six weeks of intense training.  In the seven weeks she has been with Officer New since the training, the two have made 25 arrests, apprehended a burglar, 2 pistols, 1 rifle and are responsible for taking a variety of narcotics off the streets of Abilene.

Tica is Shutzhund (a German term meaning "protection dog") titled and serves as a dual-purpose K-9 in patrol, including tracking and bite work, and narcotics.  She has also received United States Police Canine Association and National Police Canine Association certifications after arriving in Abilene as well as placing third in Patrol Region 25 Certifications.

Tica brings K-9 units to three of four authorized K-9 teams for patrol and one K-9 team in the Special Operation Division.
