Abilene Police welcome new K9 Officer

ABILENE, Texas (KTAB) - She's the newest officer on the Abilene Police force, and she's already making a name for herself. Through almost $11,000 in grant money, APD was able to purchase their new K9 officer, and Monday she was officially welcomed to the force.

"This is Tica," Chief Stan Standridge said, introducing the three-year-old Belgian Malinois.

Tica has been on the force for 7 weeks and already has some pretty successful stats.

"She's already earning awards," Chief Standridge said. "Having placed third in her certification courses. Since Officer Josh New has had her, she's been responsible for 28 arrests, the recovery of 3 firearms, she's caught a burglar, and she's already removed narcotics from the streets."

Tica's two-legged partner, Officer Josh New, learned Dutch commands to communicate with her.

"It was [a challenge] when we were testing dogs, since I was going through Czech commands, German commands, and Dutch," New said. "We've been together long enough now that I've got her commands picked up."

Officer New was the previous handler for APD's K9 officer, Thor. Thor retired and passed away shortly after.

"It's hard transitioning from a retired dog to a brand new dog, but we've made the transition really well," Officer New said. "She's great at home. She's a lover, but she knows when it's time to work as well."

The public got the chance to welcome Tica at HEB on Monday morning.
