ABILENE, Texas (KTAB) - While America celebrates the country's 241st birthday, an Abilene woman is celebrating her 90th birthday. Being a 4th of July baby, if there's one thing Mary Tovar is, it's patriotic. This year, before her birthday, she was able to visit her late husband, a United States Air Force Lieutenant.
Mary's daughter, Pamela Cassaday, describes her mother as a "firecracker."
Pamela made the trip from Alaska to Abilene to visit her mother on her birthday.
Mary says she loves her children and her country. Besides her birthday, that love for her country is due largely in part to her husband.
"My husband was Air Force, and he died," Mary says.
As Mary sat at the Veterans Cemetery and visited with her true love the day before her birthday, Pamela snapped a photo to capture the moment.
"She sat there, remembering and talking to him and sending him her love," she says. "it was pretty bittersweet. It just felt right. It felt like they were talking. It felt like she was saying 'I miss you' and dad was saying 'Happy Birthday.'"
Like our country, Mary continues to grow more beautiful with time.
"Mom is strong. Mom would give you the shirt off of her back," Pamela says.
