Abilene's Busch Jewelers closing after 73 years, liquidation underway

ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) - An iconic Abilene jewelry store is closing its doors for good after serving the community for over 70 years.

Don Fite, owner of Busch Jewelers on Cypress Street in downtown Abilene, says he's closing his business in order to retire. The store has been open since 1944.

Fite says letting go of his business is "bittersweet" but necessary because there is no one in his family interested in running things once he's gone. Fite took over the business when he was in his late 20s and has been selling designer jewelry ever since.

An official closing date has not been set. Fite says he will continue selling jewelry until his inventory is gone. All Busch Jewelers inventory will be liquidated at prices up-to 70% as Fite prepares to close up shop.

"Busch Jewelers has always been the leader in our line that we carry, in our service. We've always offered service. It's very important to people. When leave mom's or grandmom's jewelry, they want make sure it's at a trust worthy place," Fite told KRBC.

TONIGHT ON KRBC News . . . Pheben Kassahun will have more on the last days and legacy of Busch Jewelers, including an interview with an employee who's called the business home for the past 40 years.
