Abilene's Only Midwife Passes Away, Local Mothers Share Memories

ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) - Women across the region remember the impact Abilene's only midwife had on their lives in the wake of her passing on Friday.

Carol Hutson served the Abilene area for years and was beloved by the mothers she assisted during birth.

Hutson ran Tiny Blessings Maternity Care, and on the company's website, she says, "I have been attending women for 30 years. After all this time, I am still filled with excitement each time I hear the baby for the first time, get the call to attend a birth, or stand watching as a couple gets to know their newborn babe in the comfort of their own home. That kind of excitement never grows old. Whether you desire a home birth, water birth, outside birth, or have new ideas of your own, I will give my best to help you have your baby your way. "

Hutson's memorial will take place at the First Church of the Nazarene at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.

There are few midwife options in the region now that Hutson passed away. Local mothers are now seeking services in DeLeon, San Angelo, Lubbock, and other nearby cities.

Multiple women are currently in training to become midwives in Abilene. Their training will be complete in one-to-three years, according to a local birthing association.

KTAB and KRBC will have more on Hutson's life and impact on the news tonight on 5, 6, and 10. The following community members have already reached out and shared some special memories:

Haillie - "Carol was my midwife. She guided me through pregnancy and birth with love and encouragement. Her support allowed me to have the most spiritual moment of my life, and for that I am eternally grateful."

Sarah - "Carol was my midwife throughout my pregnancy and even though at the last minute I ended up not getting to deliver at home with her (due to unforeseen circumstances) I still share a extremely amazing story with her."

Jennifer - "I am part of a group of local moms who knew and loved Carol Hutson. She was my midwife for my 2nd and 3rd children. Then, years later, Carol took me under her wing as a student. She was a wise, smart, brave, loving, God-fearing woman."

Nicola - "I was her client, she was at all 6 of my births, including 3 after I battled cancer and an emergency transport where the doctor said her skill saved my baby's life."

Twila - "I was nervous until my first visit with Carol. She made me feel so at ease. She was kind, gracious, knowledgeable, peaceful, and loving. She was the most pleasant person to be around. She went on to catch my next 2 babies also. She was so much more than just my midwife. She was a dear friend and will be forever loved and missed. She made my labor and births the most enjoyable beautiful experiences in my life."

Celsi - "She helped me to find peace with my body and empowerment that I hadn’t ever known. She helped me to believe in myself fully and who God made me to be. She taught me to speak life and goodness into my babies and to embrace and honor birth. She showed me that God is in the little places and reminded us at every visit that He cares for us, that our worries are His worries, that our hopes are His hopes, and that His word is good and true. I’m so incredibly honored to have known Carol, to have been able to birth with her by my side, and to know that she is now in Heaven with our Lord and Savior. "

Daniel - "As a struggling college student at Hardin Simmons University in 2006, Carol allowed me stay in her house (rent free) during the summer because the HSU dorms closed to the students.  This allowed me to finish college on time with minimal financial burden. She was a blessing on my life and I continue to pay that blessing forward to those here in Houston TX by opening our home to families and people who are struggling."
