Anthony Williams sworn in as Abilene mayor

ABILENE, Texas (KTAB) - The Abilene city council chambers were packed full today, as friends, family and supporters all saw Abilene's newest mayor sworn into office.

Mayor Norm Archibald stepped down, joining the three previous Abilene mayors who were in attendance. Archibald was happy to hand the torch to a man who he thinks has what it takes to be mayor.

Archibald says, "I love this city, and I want to see it do even better, and Anthony is going to lead us there."

Those in attendance were happy to see their friend and candidate finally take his place at the mayor's chair. Laquiera Gant was one friend who came to see Williams take the oath of office. She is excited for the future, saying "I just look forward to seeing what's going to happen with our city."

Mayor Williams also excited for the future, and getting to business. "It was a long, hard fought campaign, but it's over now. So now the hard part begins, and I'm ready to go to work and team up with the rest of the council, and other team members of the community."

Williams' election marks two historic firsts for Abilene. He is both the first African-American, and the first McMurry graduate to be elected mayor.
