Abilene Police See Increase in DWI, Drug Cases

The Abilene Police Department released crime stats from 2016.

The department says it saw an increase in DWI and drug arrests.

"Some of the increase in that could be because we had more man power on the street," stated Sgt. Mike Baird.

Last year was also a training year. Many new officers were out on the streets and they are trained to look for and how to conduct DWI arrests.

"Sometime it could be easy to spot as far as just someone that's driving without any headlights," Sgt. Baird added.

One part of the stats Chief Standrdige is pleased about is the decrease in violent crimes.

According to APD there is an 11 percent decrease.
