ATEMS robotics team heading to state championship

ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) - The Academy of Technology, Engineering, Math and Science (ATEMS) robotics team is making their final preparations before they head to the 2017 BEST of Texas and UIL State Robotics Championship next week.

The ATEMS robotics team, which consists of 19 students, qualified for the state championship by earning several awards at the Big Country BEST Robotics contest in Sweetwater in October.

The BEST robotics competition requires students to do more than just build a robot. Students work together over the course of six weeks to create a brand and product. The skills these student demonstrate range from marketing to engineering and programming as they prepare to conduct a "Shark Tank" style marketing presentation.

The robots the students build are made from a list of required materials and have to be programmed from scratch. Students also build an exhibit booth to market their brand and product to the general public.

The competition will be held on Dec. 7 and 8 at the University of Texas at Dallas and the Dr. Pepper Arena in Frisco.
