Baird City Marshal investigating animal poisoning claims, no official reports filed

BAIRD, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) - The Baird City Marshals Office is investigating social media claims of animals poisonings around town, though no official reports have been filed.

City Marshal Eric Howard told KTAB and KRBC his office, Baird City Hall, and the Callahan County Dispatch Office have only received a single complaint of possible animal poisoning made by a woman who claimed her neighbor was trying to poison her cats but was unable to provide proof.

No other complaints have been called in over the past three months, and no reports have been filed, but social media users across Baird are claiming they're aware of multiple instances of animal poisoning within city limits.

A social media post from Howard states there is also a rumor circulating about a decapitated dog being found in town, but he says his office has "not been called to pick up any deceased animals that were suspected of death by foul play", and before seeing the claim on social media, Howard was not even aware of the allegation.

However, Howard says he is investigating these claims and is asking anyone who believes their animals have been poisoned in the past three months to call the Baird City Marshal's Office at (325) 854-5909.

Howard also says that, "In regards to the information being posted about a specific male individual, yes, we are also currently looking into his involvement if any, with any and all animal cruelty charges that might come in." He also wants to stress that this individual is innocent until proven guilty.

The full statement on the social media rumors of animal poisonings and killings in Baird reads as follows:

I need to address the community in reference to what appears to be a "Social Media Only" Firestorm over an issue of animals inside of Baird, Texas being killed and or poisoned. I have gone to Baird City Hall and to the Callahan Count Dispatch Office to verify what I am about to say. In the last 3 months, the Baird City Marshal's Office has received only 1 complaint by a citizen in reference to a belief that her animals were possibly being poisoned by a named neighbor, on her own property. Both my Deputy Marshal and I, however, have heard and seen the outpouring of information spread across Social Media in reference to apparently multiple occurrences, in cases which these persons have not contacted law enforcement in ANY capacity. We have even heard of a dog being decapitated somewhere in town. We have not been called to pick up any deceased animals that were suspected of death by foul play. We are currently investigating this, to ascertain which persons are actually reporting that their animal was harmed, and which persons are simply repeating what they have heard via rumors or social media. If you believe that in the last 3 months, that you were an actual victim of an Animal that was harmed or poisoned, please call the Baird City Marshal's Office. In regards to the information being posted about a specific male individual, yes, we are also currently looking into his involvement if any, with any and all animal cruelty charges that might come in. I will stress to all who post on social media that HE or any other person is still innocent until proven guilty in a court of law! I encourage you to contact the City Marshal's Office to report any incidents. We cannot be of any help, if the citizens do not report the information to us. Thank you.

Sincerely,
Eric Howard, City Marshal.
