Big County hog hunt benefit to donate meat to hurricane victims

RISING STAR, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) - Organizers of a hog hunting benefit in Rising Star this weekend will be smoking donated meat to serve to hurricane victims on Monday and Tuesday.

Volunteer hunters are asked to drop off any donated game at Full Drew Legends Taxidermy and Wild Game Processing at 102 S. Main Street in Rising Star, Texas, starting at 2:00 p.m. Saturday and all day on Sunday.

On Sunday, a community-wide effort will take place to use as many meat smokers as possible to cook the donated meat so volunteers can head to Rockport Monday and Port Aransas Tuesday to serve food to the victims of Hurricane Harvey, as well as first responders and volunteers in the area.

Organizer Scott Hayley, a Gulf Coast native, told KTAB and KRBC he  and other volunteers decided to spearhead this benefit because "we feel this is a great way to take one Texas problem (hogs) and solve an even bigger Texas problem (hurricane relief)."

He's asking for the following items to help get the benefit underway:

  • Volunteers to travel to the coastal bend
  • Hunters to hunt Saturday night
  • Meat (beef or pork)
  • Bbq side dishes
  • Drinks (especially water)
  • Cleaning supplies
  • Shovels
  • Gloves
  • Coolers
  • New or used tents
