Big Hearts: Brownwood boy uses birthday to help animals in need after Hurricane Harvey

BROWNWOOD, Texas (KTAB) - Kolby Mitchell is like many 6 year old boys in some ways. He likes to play sports, has the trophies to show for it, likes to swing outside, and play with his dog.

His dad, Brian Mitchell says, "He's pretty fond of animals."

But, unlike many boys his age, he received something unusual for his birthday.

"I got lots of dog food," says Kolby Mitchell.

It's exactly what he asked for.

Mitchell says,"He decided instead of presents for his birthday, he would ask for dog food and cat food, treats, and stuff like that."

Brian Mitchell, Kolby's dad, says he came up with the idea all on his own.

Kolby adds, "I got it 'cause some dogs need it and they like, they need it because, the hurricane hit my Mimi's and Papa's town."

His Mimi and Papa live near Rockport, one of the hardest hit areas after Hurricane Harvey. People and property weren't the only ones victimized by the powerful storm, animals were too.

"I just wanted to help them," says Kolby.

"It turned out to be way bigger than we thought it would be. We're very proud of him. He didn't really care about the presents but he still got presents. He's got some pretty good buddies on his soccer team," says Mitchell.

The Mitchell's plan to meet family members this weekend to deliver the dog supplies which will then be taken to a veterinarian in the Rockport area and animal shelters.
