BIG HEARTS: HSU Professor Pedaling To Inspire Students to Lead

BIG HEARTS: HSU Professor Pedaling To...

ABILENE, Texas (KTAB) -- It's not your typical college professor's office. It has bikes and bike gear a plenty. It belongs to Dr. Coleman Patterson, the Director of Leadership Study and Professor of Management and Leadership at Hardin-Simmons University.
Patterson says, "I used to ride bikes a lot when I was a kid. I did some charity rides as a kid."
But it wasn't until later down the road, Patterson  hopped on the biking lifestyle, "I wasn't like a cyclist like I am now I'm now known as a mammal; Middle-aged Man in Lycra. I'm now one of those," says Patterson.
Biking isn't just a hobby, it's part of his Leadership Studies Program.
"We've been doing long distance bike rides. Again a chance for students to organize something. So I like to say instead of doing a bake sale or a car wash, we decided to a bicycle ride. This is something the students are involved with from start of idea all the way to completion," Patterson adds.
Patterson and his students are gearing up for a journey in January to support Hurricane Harvey victims.
Patterson says, "Even though it happened several months ago, there's still a lot of need in Texas and in this area. We're just trying to create awareness and giving them the opportunity to contribute."
The trip itself is paid for thanks to a campus campaign so any money collected will go to agencies that are helping your fellow Texans recover.
"It's very meaningful. It's taking our kind of Christian witness and putting it on the road, so to speak. This is what we're called to," Patterson says.
