Brownwood Jaycees prep for 54th Lone Star Fair & Expo

BROWNWOOD, Texas (KTAB) - The Rattlesnake Roundup in Sweetwater is finished, but if you haven't had your fill of critters, there's another opportunity ahead in Brownwood.

Snakes are just one part of what you can expect in Brownwood this weekend. If you like to live a little more dangerously, some bigger reptiles are going to be back again this year. Brownwood Jaycees president Patrick McLaughlin says that after their appearance last year, Gator Country will be back again. "They're going to have a ten foot alligator that weighs over 600 pounds."

They'll also offer up a chance to get up-close and personal with the gators: "A small wading pool filled with a whole bunch of different alligators. Kids can get in there and actually hang out with the alligators." Safety is a top priority; these alligators have their mouths taped shut.

Once you've finished meeting the gang, there's shopping to be done. McLaughlin says that there are 75 vendors that have a wide spread of items available. "It's a combination of food vendors and also arts and craft vendors. We have guys selling exotic jerky, to local crafts things here at the Coliseum, so it's going to be a lot of fun."

For decades, the Fair and Expo has been playing a role in the Brownwood economy. McLaughlin explains that a significant portion of event-goers are from out of town, bringing out of town dollars with them. "Every time an outside dollar is spent in Brownwood, Texas, it turns over three times inside of Brownwood."

The Lone Star and Rodeo will be this Friday, March 16th through Sunday the 18th.
