Cinderella Project Gets Teens Prom Perfect

Abilene, Texas (KRBC)- Cinderella had her magical night at the ball and thanks to the Cinderella Project Merkel High School girls will have a night to remember as well.

"I actually almost cried when they had me come out in it because it's the best I've ever felt in a dress before and I'm not very confident in things like that," said dress recipient Nykole Daniel.

"Well, I wear jeans and a t-shirt a lot so it made me feel elegant,"  said dress recipient Sidney Wilkerson.

"Prom dresses get really expensive, so we figured it would be a great opportunity for some girls to come and get a free one incase they needed one," said project founder Shyann Gorby.

The Cinderella Project takes dress donations and then gives them out to girls who may have not been able to afford prom.

"I didn't have any money to get a prom dress. My mother recently lost her job due to health issues and I was not aware I was going to be able to go to prom this year because we didn't have money to get a dress or anything and that's a big deal for prom," said Daniel.

"I come from a really poor family so i cannot afford an expensive dress but they have beautiful gowns here and it's really amazing that i can come somewhere and get something for free that other girls spend money on," said Wilkerson.

Why is a school dance so important to these girls?

"You get to dress up in these really fancy ball gowns and go to a party type thing and there's not really another time you get to do that," said Gorby.

"It's one of those special experiences you get to experience in high school you can't experience anywhere else. You make memories and that's what high school is about," said Cinderella Project volunteer Leanna Garza.

Memories that will last a life time thanks to the generosity of teenagers acting as fairy godmothers.

"They're very supportive of people. They're very kind to everybody that they meet and they understand a situation and it doesn't matter what situation you're in," said Daniel.

The Cinderella Project will have a dress pickup day April first from noon to 8 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Merkel.
