City of Sweetwater to present Parks Plan, seeks input from residents

SWEETWATER, Texas (KTAB) - The City of Sweetwater is working to rejuvenate quality of life for their residents and they're starting with parks.

Sweetwater has four parks and one city-operated pool.

City Manager David A. Vela has worked alongside city staff to create a 10-year Parks Plan that would improve recreation in Sweetwater. That spans from playground equipment all the way to adding new aquatic features.

"Very early on in my administration when I came on board one of the first things that I did was approach the City Commission and say we need a parks plan," Vela says.

After conducting surveys, city staff found Sweetwater residents believe the parks are well maintained, they would just like to see more features.

"I think they could add a little bit more. Maybe like an obstacle course or exercise. Just like Red Bud Park they have in Abilene," Sweetwater resident, Joseph Hardin says.

The Parks Plan includes those changes, but, according to Vela, there is more in mind.

"We're looking to make some upgrades to the pool," Vela explains. "We probably need at some point in the near future slides, additional slides and things to keep the kids entertained. We're looking at lazy rivers and splash pads and aquatics is going to be a big outcome of our parks plan."

Parks and aquatics are just the tip of the iceberg.

"We're also looking at trails and trail systems through town, linking all of the schools," Vela says. "We're looking at baseball and football and soccer complexes and those types of things. Just to enhance what we're able to offer the residents and the businesses here in Sweetwater and we do look at it as an economic development effort as well."

Sweetwater residents have the chance to learn about the Parks Plans and voice their input.

An open house will be held on Thursday at Sweetwater City Hall from 4:30-7:00 pm.

There is no formal presentation, residents are invited to come ask questions and give feedback at the come-and-go event.
