Dachshund Races Return to Nelson Park Festival Gardens for 10th Year

ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) - Rescue the Animals, SPCA has announced the return of the dachshund races to the Nelson Park Festival Gardens in July.

The 10th annual dachshund races will be held Thursday, July 13, with gates opening at 5 p.m. Race registration and admission are free. Races will begin at 7 p.m., and are expected to be finished by around 9 p.m.

Registration for the races can be done online at www.rescuetheanimals.org, or in person on the day of the races. Any dachshund can race, but two people are also required for each racer, one at the start and one at the finish line.

This year, one donor is doing something special to celebrate the races, and help rescue the animals. A $10,000 Challenge Matching Grant has been established, where all donations received through the end of July will be matched.

During the festivities, a Rescued Dog Reunion and a costume contest will be held for all dog breeds. Dogs need to be current on all shots and on a leash at all times unless racing. Lots of trophies will be handed out, including a homecoming king and queen. The Reunion will begin at 6:30 p.m.
