Documents: Abilene's Veterans of Foreign Wars Post busted for illegal gambling

ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) - Several items were seized during an illegal gambling bust at Abilene's Veterans of Foreign Wars Post this week.

Court documents state $2,197 in cash, gambling computers, a checkbook, sweepstakes cards, a picture frame with odds, and a v-sweeps register were all booked into evidence after they were seized from the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6873 when a search warrant was executed at their location on the 1000 block of Veterans Drive on Thursday.

Abilene police began investigating Post 6873 for gambling in July of 2016 when an officer went into the Post undercover, received a sweepstakes card from the bar, loaded money onto it, then used that card to play a slot-machine style computer game to win $51 dollars in total, which he was later able to redeem in cash, according to the documents.

This undercover officer then returned in September of 2016 and was able to load more money onto the card he previously received and won $20 in total, which he was later able to redeem for cash.

Later that month, the documents state this officer confronted the head of Post 6873 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars State Commander and "provided them with a letter requesting they stop the illegal gambling activity at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6873". The Veterans of Foreign Wars State Commander then told the officer about the gambling computer system, which he said were being used statewide.

On Tuesday, July 25, 2017, the officer returned to Post 6873 to continue his investigation and was able to load money onto the sweepstakes card he had received one year ago. The documents state he then used this card to play the slot-machine style computer game and won $10, which he was later able to redeem for cash.

He returned on Wednesday, loaded money onto his card, used it to play the slot-machine style computer game once again, and won $80, which he was later able to redeem for cash, according to the documents.

The search warrant was executed on Thursday. It's currently unknown if any arrests have been made in connection to this case.
