Downtown manager coming to Abilene

ABILENE, Texas (KTAB) - Keeping in step with other cities, the Abilene Downtown Association is preparing for a downtown manager, someone who will need to be a real expert when it comes to downtown Abilene. This Chamber of Commerce staff member will truly need to eat, sleep, and breathe downtown.

Abilene City Manager Robert Hanna explains that although this position is not a city position, they will work closely with the City, much as the Chamber of Commerce does at present. He explains that "many communities have a downtown manager" and they work to elevate the downtown district as "the heart of our community."

Laura Moore, member of the ADA, says that this new position is coming just in time for a sort of downtown renaissance. The person filling the role will need to "be prepared for all the growth and be a part of all that growth."

There certainly has been growth in Abilene, but it isn't always downtown. Part of the manager's job will be to highlight just what downtown has to offer. Hanna explains that each location in town will "have their own economic energy".

That's just one of the unique challenges before the downtown manager, but they'll need to be equally business savvy. Moore says, "It will be important for that individual not only to be a cheerleader for our community, but have the business sense, the ability to put together opportunities and be relational, and put their best foot forward on behalf of our city."

The search for someone to fill the role is tentatively scheduled to begin in December.
