Dream of new sports complex in Abilene becoming reality

ABILENE, Texas (KTAB) - Making the Key City the place to be for youth sports is the dream of the Abilene Youth Sports Authority.

The AYSA is teaming up with the Abilene Convention and Visitors Bureau to campaign for a brand new state of the art facility.

"If we had this venue here, we would have the nucleus to start getting more teams to meet in the middle," stated AYSA supporter Gary Grubbs.

The middle meaning, Abilene.

Many teams travel through the Big Country to get to bigger cities that can host tournaments of larger sizes, using Abilene as merely a midway stop.

"The only thing we might get is people stopping for breakfast on the interstate on their way from Midland/Odessa, Lubbock to Dallas or vice-versa," added Grubbs.

The ACVB says building this complex will bring in a significant amount of money and allow them to sell Abilene as the place to be.

"It's going to be a huge success," Debi Schultz, ACVB Director of Sales said.  "It's a product that we need here in Abilene, it will generate economic impact. It will give a place for children to go."

The Abilene Youth Sports Authority is just $4 million shy of its goal.

The Abilene Youth Sports Complex will cost $10 million to build and the AYSA is still hoping to find more people interested in pledging to help bring this to the Key City.
