Dyess We Care Team helps fix up well known veteran's home

ABILENE, Texas (KTAB) - Active and retired airmen banded together to help another local well known veteran.  The Dyess We Care team fixed up Glen McGraw's home.

Glen McGraw does so much for the veterans in the community.

"He helps about 140 veterans per month in five different counties," Dyess We Care Team Leader, Bryan Carrillo said.

McGraw counsels them through PTSD anxiety and depression.

 "Myself included actually," Carrillo said.

These are problems McGraw has struggled with as well and the beach was always a comfort for him.

"That's a good healthy and renewing place for me and that's something I go to as a place to recharge," McGraw said.

So when McGraw wanted to bring the beach a little closer he asked his friend Carrillo about how to measure a wall to know how much paint he needed.

"And I sort of took that and ran with it," Carrillo said.

Carrillo jumped at the opportunity to help.

"I kind of balked at the idea in the beginning, I'm used to giving assistance not going out and getting assistance," McGraw said.

Carrillo brought in the Dyess We Care Team to turn McGraw's house into a beach paradise.

"They did it in hours that would've probably taken me a year and a half and my painting skills stink so they actually got it done much nicer than I could've done," McGraw said.

"By helping him he can help others even better even more and he doesn't have to worry so much about his house, about his living conditions so by helping him a little bit we are helping even more veterans down stream," Carrillo said.

McGraw does want to add his own personal touches.

"Overtime some of the photography that I've taken of sunrises and sunsets at the beach are going to go up," McGraw said.

McGraw said he already feels more at home.

This time of year the Dyess We Care Team needs more indoor projects like minor home repairs and paint jobs like Glen McGraw's.  To submit a request you can visit their website dyesswecareteam.com or you can call (325) 696- 8669
