East Texas Deputy's Child Killed in School Van Crash

TYLER, Texas (KETK) - A Trinity Independent School District van was involved in an accident Thursday morning in which one student was killed and multiple were injured.

According to DPS Trooper David Hendry, the crash occurred on FM 1893 in Trinity County, about five miles west of Trinity.

The preliminary investigation indicates at approximately 7:30 a.m., a Trinity ISD van, driven by 55-year-old Chandra Wheeler, of Trinity, loaded with eight children, was in the eastbound lane of FM 1893 and was stopped to pick up a child when it was struck from behind by a pick-up truck, driven by Micah Brock, 17, of Trinity.

A seven-year-old Trinity girl, identified as Journey Magness who was on the van at the time of crash, received substantial injuries and was taken from the scene to a Trinity hospital where she was pronounced dead. Sheriff Woody Wallace tells KETK, Magness is the daughter of Trinity County Deputy David Magness.

Five children were taken to the hospital by ambulance with non-life threatening injuries. Three passengers in the pickup and Wheeler were also taken to the hospital by private vehicle for precautionary measures. All of the children were properly secured at the time of the crash, according to on-scene investigators. Brock was not injured.
