ABILENE, Texas (KTAB) - It's been almost two years since Ezra Smith, a healthy toddler, died in his sleep during an afternoon nap. Today, his memory lives on through a fundraiser in his name. Sunday marked the second year of Eating for Ezra, an event held at Jason's Deli in Abilene, as well as in San Antonio.
For several hours in the evening, Jason's Deli gave a portion of their profits to the fundraiser, all of which is going to research Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood (SUDC) through the SUDC Foundation.
Ezra's mother, Michelle, explains that SUDC "happens over 400 times a year. It's actually the leading cause of death for one to four-year-olds."
Michelle says that last year, nearly $6,000 was raised through Ezra's fundraiser, hopefully bringing some answers and help to many.
