ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) - A Facebook page impersonating the City of Abilene is no longer accessible.
Around 3:30 p.m. Monday, 3 days after the first post was made, Facebook removed the page after receiving at least one harassment report.
The Facebook page, liked by hundreds of users, claimed to be a satire/spoof on the City of Abilene, claiming city officials "do nothing so we bring it to light".
Sunday, city officials released the following statement regarding the satire page:
We are aware of a bogus Facebook page that is impersonating the City of Abilene. We want to be clear that this page is a fake page and anything that has been posted or shared from the page is not from the City of Abilene and is not reflective of our values. Please report the page.
City Manager Robert Hanna told KTAB and KRBC he's not offended by the satirical nature of the page. He says he understands that comes with the territory of being a public entity.
He is, however, upset that the page made inflammatory comments toward his employees, who are just trying to do their jobs.
Hanna says he's also looking into taking legal action against the creator of the page for copyright infringement, since many of the original posts were made using the City of Abilene's logo.
