Fireworks are illegal in Abilene city limits

Abilene, Texas (KRBC) - In the City of Abilene, residents are not allowed to shoot of fireworks within the city limits but what you may not know is, it is even against the law to have opened fireworks with you.

"It is illegal to posses open packages of fireworks in the corporate city limits of Abilene. Now if they are unopened, let's say you go and you buy them and it is during transit and they are unopened that is not illegal," said Abilene Police Chief, Stan Standridge.

Even though fireworks are not allowed to be set off in Abilene, officials can't stop fireworks from being sold.

"We can't stop the fireworks stands from selling fireworks," said personal development manager for the Abilene Fire Department, J Sanders.

If you do want to buy fireworks, W. Fireworks off os US 277 is hoping  you'll purchase yours there because part of the funds go towards the NEw Hope Church's college ministry.

"It's new hope church that gets the proceeds but the college ministry taking it over, we got some college guys over there working at the warehouse," said New Hope's college minister, Mark Setser.

After purchasing your fireworks, make sure you have a few key items to stay safe this New Year.

"We just encourage people that if they are going to use fireworks be safe about it, have a water source available incase they do need to extinguish a grass fire and just be responsible with it," said Sanders.

It can be a costly if you set them off without precautions.

"If you start a grass fire on your property and it runs to your neighbors house and burns there fence line down or burns their house down you are still libel," said Sanders.

Just a reminder that 911 operators get overwhelmed with the number of calls on busy weekends so if you do call for fireworks use the nonemergency number, (325) 673-8331.
