Formal charges filed against suspect involved in high-speed chase through Abilene

ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) - Formal charges have been filed against a suspect arrested Monday after allegedly stealing a camaro from an Abilene dealership then leading law enforcement on a high-speed chase.

Michael Howard is being held in the Taylor County Jail on bonds totaling $110,000 for Aggravated Assault of a Public Servant, Evading Arrest with a Vehicle, Unauthorized Use of Motor Vehicle, Possession of Methamphetamine.

Police at the scene of Howard's arrest on the 2500 block of Minter Lane told KTAB and KRBC he had abandoned a red camaro stolen from Star Dodge in the neighborhood and was attempting to flee on foot when he was apprehended around 5:00 p.m.

Officers recovered a magazine and gun from Howard's possession and are currently searching the vehicle for drugs or other evidence.

During the chase, Howard struck a marked Taylor County Sheriff's vehicle and scanner traffic indicated he may have hit additional parked cars as he attempted to evade arrest.

One witness said Howard "whizzed past him", just inches from hitting him and a couple getting into another vehicle.

Surveillance video from Star Dodge shows Howard breaking into the business Sunday night, taking the keys to the camaro and loading the vehicle up with goods stolen from the store, according to police.

BigCountryHomepage will provide more information on this chase as additional details are released.
