Good Samaritan dies trying to help trapped workers in East Texas

JOAQUIN, Texas (KETK) - A Good Samaritan is dead after he attempted to help city workers trapped in a collapsed manhole.

According to the Shelby County Sheriff's Office, Patrick Parks, 52, of Joaquin, died Tuesday evening trying to save city employees repairing pipes in a manhole. The accident occurred on East Saddle Street in Joaquin.

Deputies reported finding a large hole on the east side of Saddle Street when they arrived on scene. They learned two Joaquin city employees and an on-looker had become trapped inside. Emergency responders were already working to help the trapped group.

Rescue crews were able to free the city workers, but the on-looker died.

Deputies later learned a contractor, who escaped before the collapse, was working with two city employees to clasp sewer pipes together when the east wall in the manhole failed. Parks jumped into the hole to help and the west wall also collapsed.
