Guilty verdict lands Abilene mother in prison for life

ABILENE, Texas (KTAB) - An Abilene mother will now spend her life in prison after a jury found her guilty of killing her newborn daughter only moments after giving birth.

Amber Craker, 20, was found guilty of Capital Murder and Tampering with Evidence after murdering her daughter and throwing her in the trash can.

Craker's Grandmother, Jewel Brown says she doesn't believe this guilty verdict is right.

"I know Amber wouldn't do something like this, I can feel it in my heart and my gut," stated Brown.

She told KTAB News, Amber loved babies and isn't capable of being a killer.

Brown, she is also the great-grandmother of the victim.

"I love her (baby Ashley), I wish I could see her," added Brown. "All I've seen are pictures."

It's those gruesome pictures Taylor County District Attorney Jim Hicks believes helped him win this case.

"It wasn't easy for the jury to listen to the testimony that an 18-year-old would do something this horrid," Hicks said.

Hicks stated in his closing augments that this was the first time in 20 years he's brought a baby victim to court where no blood family was there to advocate for it.

"Ashley does have a family," explained Hicks. "It's called the Abilene Police Department."

Referring to some officers with the APD "adopting" baby Ashley and providing her a proper burial.

Although Hicks feels relieved from this case he says justice is only half served.

His office will now prepare for Amber's co-defendant and father of baby Ashley, Damian Cate to be tried for the same thing.

Cate will be in court in January.
