Hendrick Medical Center updated their NICU

ABILENE, Texas (KRBC)- Hendrick Hospital will open a new neo-natal intensive care unit next week, it will have 25 beds and four private rooms, this is a new feature for the hospital..

"It's larger, there's more privacy, there's more room for the baby and the family to be around the baby. officially technology we have the latest and greatest" greatest," said Dina Davis, Director of Women's and children's at Hendrick.

Doctors are now able to take care of more premature babies, even younger than 32 weeks. This is something they couldn't do before. Getting these new updates was not a fast process.

"We looked at what our patients needed, what our families needed and what the community needed and we planned accordingly. we started recruiting neonatologist back in 2013," said Davis.

It took a whole group of people to get this NICU up and going.

"In a NICU it is not just the nursing staff that is involved, there is so many support departments that are involved as well, all these different things, and we had to get everyone up to speed and trained in the care of neonates so that we would be able to do this," said Davis.

Everyone is looking forward to the new equipment and space.

"We are really excited about that, to be able to care for them in this environment," said Davis.

Hendrick's NICU will get inspected in January, hoping to move to a level three NICU.
