Houston police officer drowned trying to get to work during flood

HOUSTON, Texas (CNN) - Houston Police Sgt. Steve Perez was on his way to work at 4 a.m. on Sunday, but he never made it in.

"He could not find a path," Chief Art Acevedo said, referring to the rising waters.

"Our hearts are saddened," Mayor Sylvester Turner said. "He was seeking to serve this city."

Perez was a 34-year veteran of the Houston Police Department. He was just two days shy of his 61st birthday.

The Cajun Navy helped the police force look for the officer all day, but couldn't. The officer drown in his car in an underpass that was flooded.

Chief Acevedo said the officer's wife tried to get him to stay home, but he refused, telling her "we've got work to do."
