How the cold weather affects insects

Abilene, Texas (KRBC) - It has been below freezing these last couple of weeks and these freezing temperatures are killing off most insects but it is very likely that they will be back in full force for summer time.

Steve Este with the county extension agent for agriculture and natural resources says the freeze should kill off most insects but the ones surviving will reproduce.

"Insects are pretty resilient, they can make it through cold weather. Even if some die then when in the spring when conditions are right they will start populating again, they can reproduce pretty quickly, so it really shouldn't have too much of an impact, it is sad to say, on our insect population," said Estes.

So for particular insects that normally show up next spring, due to the freeze we most likely could not see them until mid to late summer.
