Infant Killed, Father Injured in West Texas House Fire

ECTOR COUNTY, Texas (KMID/KPEJ) - Saturday afternoon, a house fire took a tragic turn in Odessa.  This blaze leaving a 9 month old baby boy dead and one adult in critical condition. 

"Upon arrival Odessa Fire Rescue did see smoke coming from the home.  There was one adult who was trying to put the fire out," said Andrea Goodson, Odessa Police Public Coordinator.

As crews responded to the fire, one man was airlifted to a Lubbock hospital, in critical condition. 

Goodson said three children were in the home , with one adult, at the time of the fire.  Two of the children came out safe; while the baby, didn't make it after an officer tried to save him.

"Officer John was the first one scene.  He did attempt to go into the house, but had to come back out.  He has been transported as a precaution with smoke inhalation," said Goodson.

The Odessa Police Department and Fire Rescue responded in time to contain the fire within 10 minutes, but they were unable to save one life from the flames. 

"There is very heavy fire damage.  There is smoke, heat, and water damage throughout the remainder of the home," said Goodson.

Now, the home still standing, but Goodson says it's unlivable for the family. 

"I have complete confidence the Red Cross will be able to assist the family," said Goodson.

Now, the cause of the fire is still unknown and under investigation at this time.
