Jones Co. Woman Gets 20 Years for Killing Father of Her Child

JONES COUNTY, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) - A Jones County woman has been sentenced to serve 20 years behind bars after pleading guilty to the murder of the father of her child.

Brianna Celeste Lopez, 21, pleaded guilty to Murder and three counts of Aggravated Assault on Tuesday in connection to a crash that killed Sha'trell Kendrick, 20. A judge then gave her a 20-year prison sentence for the crimes.

Lopez and Kendrick were engaged in an argument about their son before the fatal crash on the evening of April 17, 2016, according to court documents, which say the couple left the scene of the argument in separate vehicles and both began to head down FM 1597 toward Lueders.

Kendrick, who was a passenger in a second vehicle, according to the documents, which say Lopez did have a child inside her vehicle during the incident. Court documents initially claimed there were two children involved in the crash, but the Jones County District Attorney's Office confirmed there was only one child involved.

The documents also describe the sequence of events that lead to the crash, saying, "Lopez passed [Kendrick's vehicle] and sped away, then turned around, going west in the eastbound lane of FM 1597 as [Kendrick's vehicle] was going east."

The documents say the driver of Kendrick's vehicle tried to avoid Lopez by swerving into the other lane, but Lopez rammed into his vehicle, killing Kendrick who was seated in the passenger seat.

When Lopez was taken to the hospital she "admitt[ed] to striking the vehicle intentionally," during an interview, according to the documents.
