Lawmakers vow to help after Boy Scout boating tragedy

LONGVIEW, Tyler (KETK) - It's been nearly a week since three Hallsville boy scouts were killed in the Lake o' the Pines boating tragedy. The grief in Hallsville after three boy scouts were electrocuted while sailing on the lake has hit everyone hard. That includes the people who represent this community, in Austin.

Representative  Jay Dean says, "I never fathomed something so tragic could possible happen."

Representative Dean says he too, was a boy scout. He believes it's his job to ensure something is done, so this doesn't happen again.

"There's now been two tragic accidents involving power lines. One is too many," he says.

His colleague, Representative Chris Paddie says he often visits Lake o' the Pines. He is waiting to hear what the investigation into the tragedy, conducted by Texas Parks and Wildlife, shows.

"Your mind drifts to what if that happened to your child. For a community and particularly a close knit community, in East Texas it's devastating," Rep. Paddie says.

Congressman Louie Gohmert says he attended Thursday's funeral for Will Brannon, the first of the three boy scouts involved in the tragedy, to be buried.

He says the time for legislation comes after the matter is investigated and "we find out exactly why that wire was situated as it was."

But some lawmakers are doing their own investigating.

"I've looked at a number of reports at how high lines have to be above lakes," Rep. Dean says. "I know there have been some grandfather clauses that have taken place. This issue has to be unfolded, looked into and that's what we plan to do when I go back home"
