Abilene artists celebrate women

ABILENE, Texas (KTAB) - In a time where women are taking a stand with the #MeToo movement, local artists are putting on a show to celebrate women. It's called Femmes Fatales and the purpose is to empower women through art.

"A woman has so many qualities about her that are sacred," Event founder and artist, Casey Chavez said.

In a man's world, local artists are giving women a voice.

"Regardless of the repression that has happened to women throughout time they have created and they will always create," another founder and artist, Larla Morales said.

The art is celebrating women.

"Concentrating on the idea of femininity and what it means to be a woman in today's society," Morales said.

With inspiration ranging from domestic abuse to women in history.

"Lascaux is a cave in France where some of the earliest depictions of art have been found and there's a wall there that has a series of hand prints where the artists had put the pigments in their mouths actually and spit over their hands to leave the form of their hands and I'm not that hardcore so I just put the mud on my hand and actually pressed it in on to the board," Morales said describing one of her pieces.

There's a piece every woman can identify with.

"I think we've all felt, I don;t know thrown away by someone or even ourselves sometimes and I think that's something all women can relate to," Morales said.

Using her experience as a mother, one artist is showing her strength hoping to inspire her daughter.

"I want to be an artist just like mommy," Chavez's daughter, Luna said.

"Just want her to grow up free and express what she feels," Chavez said.

Chavez said she hopes the art shows women are powerful and should be celebrated.

The show begins tomorrow and the reception is from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM.  The Gallery will be open Monday through Friday from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM and 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM Saturday and Sunday. All of the proceeds from donations or purchase of the art will go to the Regional Victim Crisis Center.
