Man accused of striking, killing ACU student on bike pleads guilty

ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) - The man accused of striking with his car an Abilene Christian University student who was riding her bike has pleaded guilty to Manslaughter.

Charles Schaefer, 21, pleaded guilty to the charge and agreed to a punishment of 10 years of probation and a combined year in jail. Six months of the sentence was for the DWI charge he was accused of during the incident. 

While the sentencing has been agreed upon, it will become official next week when the victim's family will be in court. 

A Taylor County grand jury had indicted Shaefer in January 2017.

Shaefer was accused of hitting 21-year-old Casey Ellis, of Bethel, Connecticut, while on her bike on Nov. 23, 2016. The incident happened at the intersection of Ambler Avenue and North Judge Ely Boulevard.
