Man dies while trying to save his daughter from their home fire

 

Abilene, Texas (KRBC) - A family torn apart after an overnight home fire, taking the lives of Kenny Osteen and his 4-year-old stepdaughter, Karleigh..

"He would not have left that house without Karleigh, if he could have got to her and that looked like that was what he was trying to do, the very best that he could," said Kenny's mother, Esther.

"My son gave his last breath trying to save a life, to me i am proud of him, i am proud of his actions," said Kenny's father, Jim.

Officials say Kenny saved his 7 year-old daughter, Emily and went back in the house to try to save his stepdaughter but the two didn't come out.

"Karleigh was still there and he couldn't find her, he was not leaving with out her," said Esther.

7-year-old Emily was transported to a hospital in Dallas in ICU and is expected to survive

"Emily is going to need multiple surgeries, skin graft, fourth degree burns through about 30 percent of her body," said Esther.

The family lost everything but an organization called Eastland County Helping Others, also known as "ECHO" has been on top of it to help out, gathering a list of items needed by the family in the wake of this fire, clothes are an immediate need for the family ms members.

"You can find that on Eastland County Texas breaking news, that is a site that we run. hopefully we can get them taken care of, also somebody is posting a link to a page for a go fund me," said Ken Knowles, founder of ECHO.

"The money that we gather will only benefit them," said  Esther.

The cause of the fire is still unknown and under investigating.
