McAllen Elementary School Seeing Increased Success With Method for Teaching Dyslexic Students

MCALLEN, Texas - One of the biggest challenges for students with Dyslexia is learning how to read and write. Ben Milam Elementary School in McAllen is seeing increasing success with a new method of teaching.

Keigan Cormier a 5th grade student at Milam Elementary said, "It was super hard. They'll give me sentences always in the morning. And you'd have to re-spell the sentence. I'd just recopy the sentence because I didn't know what was wrong with it."

For as long as Keigan can remember, he has struggled with learning how to read and write. It's a challenge he'll have to face every day due to his severe Dyslexia. But this year, his teachers have found a new way to improve Keigan and his classmates' reading skills.

Jessica Hernandez, Dyslexia teacher said, "The Herman Method is actually a multi-sensory program. We're bringing in Kinesthetics, we're bringing in oral language, it's all direct teach. Visual cues, it's all multi-sensory."

With just 45 minutes a day and lots of patience, Keigan has made significant strides with the Herman method.

"I started showing improvement. My teacher a few weeks ago, I read out loud something to the class. And she's like, look at Keigan. He couldn't read this last year, he couldn't read or do anything like this last year. So everyone clapped for me." Said Keigan.

Jessica Hernandez, "I believe this program will teach all spectrums of Dyslexia. They'll be able to read. I can't guarantee that they're going to actually be reading at grade level, but we will see progress throughout the years.”

Keigan says he finds himself feeling frustrated some days. But he says the important thing is to never give up. "Don't give up, don't shut down, don't do anything in the past that really stopped the learning."

Next school year Keigan will be moving on to middle school where he plans to run for class president.
