Michael Pine Speaks with KRBC about Varner Murder

One of Three Suspects Tells KRBC his Story

ABILENE, Texas (KRBC)- Three suspects are behind bars for Capital Murder in connection to the death of an Abilene man whose body was found on road in Jones County in August of 2016.

Ronald "Ronnie" Varner was found dead on CR 347 in Hawley on August 2, 2016. Court documents say he was shot at least five times.

Monday, June 19th, 2017, three suspects, Euella Cooper, 38, Michael Pine, 37, and Olyvia Jackson, 25, were arrested  on Capital Murder warrants issued for Varner's death.

Pine spoke with KRBC at the Taylor County Jail about his warrant.

"They think me and my wife killed somebody, that's why we are in here." Said Pine.

According to Amber Koch, a resident at Windgate Mobile Homes, she hear police escort Pine out of a home.

"We all walked outside and walked around, to where we saw multiple police cars and SWAT team members, with guns, yelling for Michale Pine." Koch told KRBC.

Koch says Pine looked as if he didn't know what was going on.

"They told him to get down on the ground and put his hands up and get down and he complied." Added Koch.

Pine told KRBC that he was confused on why both him and his wife, Euella Cooper, were arrested on Capital Murder warrants issued for the death of their friend, Ronald Varner.

"Knowing that we didn't do anything wrong and we got this charge held above our head, just doesn't make sense." Said Pine.

According to court documents, a relative of Varner told police that he was house sitting at this home on the 1500 block of Sycamore and that same relative told police that Varner did call her on August 1st, a day before he was found dead and said he stated that he had been tied up and beaten.

Pine explained that he would never kill a man or even try.

"That's what they're saying, and I guess there is four of us they are after, they got three and I guess they are looking for somebody else too." Said Pine.

The same documents say that a witness also spoke with detectives and said Pine was at her house looking for ammunition the night before Varner was found dead.

But Pine disagrees and says he would admit if he did it.

"I don't think I can take somebody else's life."

Documents say that the second witness, who will not be identified until he's formally arrested, says he shot and killed Varner on the side of the road while Olyvia Jackson was present.

Pine said he knows that someone has spoken up about what they believe happened.

" I know a lot of them have been pressing other people to say that I did it, but at the same time they all know if I ever did it, if I ever did anything, I'm going to tell them that I did it, and I'm not going to run and hide from it."
