More Lane Closures Expected on Abilene's Hwy 351

ABILENE, Texas (PRESS RELEASE) – As contractors work to construct the westbound I-20 bridge over SH 351, a new round of temporary lane closures will be in place July 5 and 6.

The intersection of SH 351 and I-20 will be closed during evening hours only on July 5 and July 6 from approximately 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. each night. The intersection will be open to traffic during daytime hours both days.

During this closure, frontage roads will be reduced to one lane. Thru traffic will be detoured along the frontage roads to either Loop 322 or FM 600, depending on the direction of travel. This is the same detour that was implemented for the previous intersection closure.

This brief closure will allow workers to place concrete beams for the next step of bridge construction.

Motorists are encouraged to allow for extra time to reach their destination while this detour is in place, and should be especially watchful for unexpected lane changes or closures, crew members and large, heavy equipment present in this and all work zones.

The $14,639,000 contract was awarded to Webber, LLC, of The Woodlands, Texas. This project also will include installation of metal beam guard fence, concrete pavement, illumination, signage, and pavement markings. The expected completion date for this project is Spring 2018.

TxDOT routinely inspects state-maintained bridges to ensure that design and structural requirements are met. Upon inspection of these bridges, it was determined that the structures were due to be replaced and upgraded to meet modern design standards.
