Report: Family of 6 drowns inside van during Hurricane Harvey

HOUSTON, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) - A family of 6, including 4 children, are believed to have drowned in their van while trying to escape Hurricane Harvey Sunday afternoon, according to a report from KHOU.

The report states family members confirmed the deaths to KHOU, saying a van carrying 4 children under the age of 16 as well as their great-grandparents, both in their 80s, and their great-uncle, hit high water while trying to cross a bridge in Houston.

The great-uncle, who was driving, was able to crawl out of the vehicle, according to the report, which states he tried to get the children out the back, but failed and had to hold onto a tree branch while the van sank underwater.

KHOU reports, "the six people still inside were an 81-year-old woman and her 84-year-old husband, along with their four great-grandchildren: A 16-year-old girl, a 14-year-old boy, an 8-year-old boy, and a 6-year-old girl."
