Residents Express Concerns at 1st Joint Land Use Study Workshop

Monday night's meeting helped some land and property owners get a better understanding of a JLUS. Naturally, they came in with concerns,"I think we're concerned that there may be some things that we want to build that we could not do. We're also concerned about the fact that this could devalue our property," said Gayle Potter who owns land southeast of the Dyess AFB runway.

The main objective of the Joint Land Use Study (JLUS) is to reduce current and potential conflicts between Dyess AFB and surrounding communities. At the same time, it's meant to accommodate new growth and economic development, protect public health and safety, and much more.

Not everyone is excited right now, but it's just the beginning,"we're going to not have everyone be in concert I should say, but we do our very best to provide that," says Celeste Warner of the Matrix Design Group.

The Matrix Design Group was brought in by the city of Abilene to do the JLUS. With the help of residents, they put in recommendations to reduce conflicts between military missions and surrounding areas,"The contract is with the city of Abilene, but the client is the city of Tye, the city of Abilene, Taylor County, and all of you, the citizens of the community around Dyess Air Force Base," said Warner.

Several residents say they'll be sure to attend the upcoming meetings to stay educated on the JLUS, "I think this is something we need to do, we need to make sure everybody is safe. This is all really important to us. We need to do the best to see if this can work out for everybody," said Potter.

The next few meetings will provide even more information to help educate those who will be effected.

The Matrix Group says in order to develop a study and recommendations that are responsive to local needs, input from the community is essential, you can submit your comments and get more info at www.dyessjlus.com .
