Merkel Talks About Amber Alert

ABILENE, Texas (KTAB) - A 13-year-old girl is found after an Amber Alert is issued out of Merkel.

"It's absolutely terrifying to think that it could be my kid," stated Dora Robbins.

She didn't know the 13-year-old girl but said she could relate. Her son is 14-years-old.

Other residents were shocked to know an Amber Alert was issued right in their backyard.

"Having an Amber Alert here in Merkel, Texas was news to me," added Amanda Rhyme. "We've never had one here."

The Merkel Police Department said the girl originally left her grandmother's home on Yucca Street back in March with her biological mother.

It wasn't until yesterday when she was reported missing after an official order was signed taking temporary custody away from her parents.

A few short hours after the Amber Alert went out, the Texas Department of Public Safety discontinued the alert because the case did not meet the criteria.

Merkel Police told KTAB they continued to search for the girl until she was found safe hiding in a home on the 1000 block of South 7th in Merkel.

Officials have not said if her mother or anyone else will be facing charges in her disappearance.
