Rio Grande Valley boxer to represent US at world stage

MERCEDES, Texas (KVEO) - A Mercedes Boxer is preparing for a trip to Germany for an international fight.
At only 18 years old, Cristian Roman will be one of the select fighters to represent the United States.

Appearances don’t always tell the full story. A Mercedes gym may look old, abandoned and decrepit. But the training that goes on inside is on par with the best gyms.

Day in and day out, Cristian trains with his father and his coaches to become the very best.
It has been a difficult journey for this fighter, but results are paying off.

Beto Carr, with Beto’s Boxing, says “[Roman] is rated number one in the U.S. right now. He just came back from Olympic training.”

Cristian Roman’s father got him into the sport at just 3 years old. 15 years later, his goal is joining Team USA in the 2020 Olympics. For the first time in his life Roman will head out to Germany and represent the United States in the International Boxing Association World Championship Tournament.

“You’re not just an athlete anymore you’re representing your country. There is a standard you have to meet,” says Roman.

According to the coaches those standards are hard work, dedication and perseverance among many others. Many aspire to a high status in the world of boxing. Carr says he sees a bright future for the young boxer. “He does everything he needs to do, takes care of himself. He stays healthy, he stays away from outside distractions,” says Carr.

Despite being a unique opportunity, Roman is confident in his abilities as a fighter. “There’s always room for improvement. I’ve always wanted to be the best of the best and to be the best and stay on top you’ve got to train like the best,” says Roman.

Soon, he’ll be representing his hometown, the state, and the country
Roman will head out to Germany in the upcoming days. From all of us at News Center 23, Good Luck!
