San Antonio family says teen's suicide the result of the Blue Whale internet challenge

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) - A San Antonio teen is dead, and his family says an internet challenge is to blame.

The family of a 15-year-old San Antonio teen says an internet challenge, called the Blue Whale Challenge, is behind their son's suicide.

According to, after joining the Blue Whale Challenge social media group, an administrator assigns tasks for a 50-day period, with the tasks becoming progressively more dangerous. These challenges include anything from watching videos sent by the administrator to self-mutilation and ultimately suicide.

The victim's sister told that administrators would send threats if tasks were not completed.

The family is urging parents to keep track of their children's social media activities to try and help prevent future tragedies.
