Suspect gets probation for shooting death of Hamlin man

JONES COUNTY, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) - A suspect accused of shooting and killing a Hamlin man has been sentenced to probation after pleading guilty to the crime.

Oscar Villarreal, 24, was sentenced to serve 10 years of deferred adjudication after pleading guilty to one count of Manslaughter Wednesday in connection to the death of Lupe Romero, 58.

A second suspect, Sanpio Samrora Jr., 38, is charged with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm.

A press release from the Hamlin Police Department states an investigation revealed Samrora was at the home on the 600 block of NE Avenue B in Hamlin where Romero was shot and killed in March of 2017.

The release also states Villarreal admitted he falsely accused other suspects for the crime and confessed to shooting and killing Romero himself. He was taken into custody and charged with murder following the confession.
