Sweetwater HS student struck by vehicle while walking to school

SWEETWATER, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) - A Sweetwater High School student is in critical condition after she was struck by a vehicle while walking to school Tuesday morning.

Superintendent Dr. George McFarland says the student was hit as she was attempting to cross Lamar Street near the tennis courts by Sweetwater Middle School around 7:00 a.m.

The 15-year-old student, who has not been identified, was in stable condition as she was transported to an Abilene hospital via helicopter, according to Dr. McFarland.

Sweetwater Police Chief Brian Freda says the student's current condition is critical.

The cause of the crash has not been determined, though Chief Freda told KTAB and KRBC the preliminary investigation indicates no citations will be issued in connection to this incident.

Sweetwater ISD wants the community to know that "as a district, we appreciate your prayers for this student and the family."
