Texas comptroller returns record amount of unclaimed property. . .you could cash in too!

TEXAS (KTAB/KRBC) - You could be missing money and not even know it - a surprise payday could be coming your way courtesy of Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar.

He returned a record-breaking $281 million by giving unclaimed property funds back to their rightful owners during the fiscal year for 2017 - the fifth record-breaking year in a row.

“This achievement shows our commitment to reuniting more unclaimed property with more rightful owners than ever before,” Hegar said. “Our hardworking staff returned nearly a quarter of a billion dollars back to Texans all over our great state.”

These unclaimed funds can be from a number of things - forgotten utility deposits or other refunds, insurance proceeds, payroll checks, cashier's checks, dividends, mineral royalties, dormant bank accounts, and abandoned safe deposit box contents.

The unclaimed funds do not disappear. They can be claimed at any time. To check and see if you have unclaimed property, visit ClaimItTexas.org or call 1-(800)654-3463.
